happy valley news

It’s been a fantastic week, lots happening in happy valley. The garden is in now. We’re having a drought, so it will be interesting to see how I can water less, but still have a small garden.

Also, got news last week that my hex sign art was chosen to be featured at a local store called Stripe Men. It’s an awesome store in downtown Santa Cruz right off Pacific Ave for men decorated in mid century furniture and vintage items. They provide an inspirational playground for customers to find products from some of the best local talent, like me 😉 The art show is on Friday, December 4 from 5-9 PM  and the art will be on display and for sale through out December. Super EXCITING. Everyone is invited.

Lastly, I am super stoked to be featured a couple weeks ago on a blog called a Daily Dose of Pattern. Check out may pattern and if you like patterns, check out Esther Bley’s patterns. She does some really lovely work.

What have you been up to this week.

pocket note books & hex signs

I’ve got hex signs and pocket notebooks for sale in my etsy shop. The hex signs are 15 x 15 on reclaimed wood. The pocket notebooks were watercolor paintings that I turned into a repeat pattern and have them created into journals. They were inspired by the birds I see here in happy valley and my own imagination.

The journals are printed in full color on 100% acid free recycled paper interior and exterior covers, the pocket size journal is the perfect addition for your commute or travel bag. They are $12 plus shipping.
Each pocket journal is handcrafted with care in the USA.

house pattern, love

Hello! I didn’t get to post on the weekend, because I was with my favorite grandson, Ethan. He is 16 months and a total joy. He spent the night up at our house. After he left, I worked on a new pattern from my line art of houses. What do you think?

I also went online to Zazzle and made some bound journals with my art work. I can’t wait to see them.

What have you been up to this week?

spring garden

It’s spring here in Happy Valley and that means garden planning time. Last year I grew many varieties of lettuce, onion, kale, spinach, and peppers. Below is a picture of the garden when it was 30 days old.

The second picture below is a drawing I did in my journal, tracking what was growing and what didn’t make it. Well, it’s time to start planting.

Watercolor Garden 2013

I have two small beds that we cut from an old pear box. First I have to gather the worm castings in order to fertilize the soil. Check out our worm bin it is thriving!

After I turned in the worm castings I got a nice mixture of soil that looked like this in the beds.

Then I planted the veggies. This year I got two kinds of lettuce, kale, spinach, bok choy and two kinds of tomatoes. I’ve never had luck in town with tomatoes, because of the fog. I’m hoping since it’s usually 10 degrees warmer out  here in Happy Valley, that they’ll do really well.

And we ended up with two boxes filled with veggies!

What are you planting this spring?

Life in the orchards

Wanted to share some pictures of the orchards where we live. We rent the original farm house on a 200 acre pear and apple orchard. The orchards aren’t currently farmed and the owners are slowly turning some of the acreage over to grapes. We are 6.5 miles from town, which is a big uphill bike ride home.

This is meditation point and the highest point of the 200 acres. It looks down and out to the ocean. This view has inspired many of my creations.

Here are the orchards in the spring. The pear trees blossom these beautiful white flowers. They are just beginning to flower this year.

Below is the neighbors barn that is across Pippin Lane, which is also the name of my etsy shop. It’s a nice spot to take photos and I love the look and feel of the old building.

Here is the view from our deck of our backyard. It looks down into Happy Valley and feels really expansive. We love the bed spring fence that the previous tenants installed.
