farm flora

The holidays are over and I had a free Friday to myself. It’s been raining here in Santa Cruz and I’m loving the results. It’s GREEN, the streams are flowing, and the grass is growing. It’s our spring. Went for a walk and gathered some sketching fodder.

Here is a peek of some of the sketches. I tried to use some different tools to sketch, but always seem to come back to the Micron 5 and Micron 1. 😉

happy valley yard

Hi! A couple weeks ago when I was showing you the interior of our house and the loop hiking trail, some of you asked to see pictures of the front and back yard. We rent and I don’t really like the paint job on our house, but it is quite a lovely view from our deck. Here are some shots of our front and back yard, enjoy!

Happy Mothers Day!

This week I thought I would share my house with you. I live in Happy Valley in Santa Cruz on a 200 acre pear and apple orchard and rent the original farm house that has hard wood floors and great views down the valley to the ocean. Here are some pictures I took this week of the interior of our house.

frakturs and hex signs

Hi! It’s raining here in Santa Cruz. An event that has only happened three times since December. So, it’s quite exciting.

Through an old friend from Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania, I’ve discovered fraktur art. I’m super excited to try some of this in the coming weeks. What do you think? It fits well with my hex signs.

Fraktur art, like hex signs, is also a type of Pennsylvania Dutch, German folk art. Frakturs were made for special occasions in life like births, marriages, deaths, etc. The pieces originated and were common in Pennsylvania, where I grew up. Frakturs are usually ink and watercolor and contain beautiful fonts. I’m particularly interested in the motifs for patterns. Here is a typical fraktur.

I love this fraktur for a motif for a repeating pattern.

Talking about Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, here is the completed collection of hex signs and am looking for a local Santa Cruz store to feature them for the First Friday Art Tour in Santa Cruz. They are also for sale in my etsy shop. The hex signs are on square, 15 x 15 reclaimed fence board. Here is some of the pieces in the collection.

I’ve also been creating patterns with them in Photoshop. What could you envision these patterns on laptop skins. shower curtains, tea towels?

Let me know and have a GREAT week.

memorial day weekend happenings

It’s going to be a fabulous, four day weekend. With friends visiting, sidewalk sales including the semi annual Patagonia sale, lovely weather and family.  Santa Cruz has had a FABULOUS spring. I think it’s the best time of year to be here.

Here’s what I’ve been up to in the last week…

I’ve been perfecting my pancake recipe.  I think it’s gotten pretty good.

I’ve also put my designs on three small, pocket notebooks. I had them printed through Zazzle. I liked the quality, but they weren’t inexpensive, which means I can’t resell. I also have been looking at putting some of my art on Society 6. I’ve heard that folks don’t really make that much money and that they’ve actually had their designs stolen. What do you think of the notebooks?

We’re heading on vacation in the next week, so I’ll post pictures of of adventures. Have a great week!
