getting ready for the holidays

I’ve been getting in the holiday mood by drawing wreaths and decorating the house. Here are a couple of my wreaths.

I’ve also been making my own gift tags.

Here is a picture of our hearth. We didn’t do a tree this year. I love my reindeer, gifted to us by our son-in-law a couple years ago.

chimney rock and lake lure flowering bridge

Recently I visited North Carolina. I went on many hikes. My favorite one was Chimney Rock. Here is a shot above the chimney.

Chimney Rock, North Carolina

After the hike up Chimney Rock, I visited Lake Lure and found this wonderful flower garden. It was built over a bridge. Here are flowers and foliage pictures I took.

bugs and the north carolina arboretum

I visited the North Carolina Arboretum recently. It was a lot of fun. They had this exhibit called the “World of Giant Insects.” They were huge and they moved and made noises. Here is a picture of some of them.

They inspired me to draw. Here is a peek into my buggy sketchbook.

creative fridays and kelly rae

I’ve been creating with Kelly Rae Roberts in my art studio. Yes, you heard me. I’ve been creating with Kelly Rae.

Each Friday she sends out an unscripted video of herself creating some fabulous painting. The videos are anywhere from an hour to three hours. It has been a lot of fun. It’s like having her here in my studio and has spurred me to create more. She is down to earth, inspirational, and super funny. I love that she sings and even dances. She is an inspiration on being brave and doing what one loves.

Below is Kelly Rae in my studio.

You can find out how to join us and about her unscripted videos here. Below are some photos of what I’ve created while watching and listening to her videos.

This last week she had Flora Bowley join her in the studio. They are a hoot together. They each started with two canvases and then kept swapping. The end result was beautiful.

What has inspired you this week? What have you been up to?

e.g. lutz and sketching

I was inspired by an online artist to buy the book What to Draw and How to Draw It, by E.G. Lutz. It was first published in 1913. Here is the cover.

How to Draw

This book is fun and has inspired me to draw things I wouldn’t normally be drawn to like dogs. Here is a view of my sketching afternoon.

I scanned the images into PhotoShop. This would make good stickie notes. What do you think?

Happy Turkey Day weekend from North Lake Tahoe!

I’ve been working on creating repeats with water colors. I’m loving this technique. I take an original water color and scan it into Photoshop; clean it up and then import into Adobe Illustrator, where I make it into a vector and create a pattern. Here is a peak at some of my simple watercolor motifs.

Below is the Illustrator half drop repeat. I’m loving the half drops as they hide the pattern better.

sketching characters

Last week I started the last module of pattern design class at the Art and Business of Surface Design with Rachel Taylor. This module is called The Ultimate Portfolio Builder. The first week has been all about drawing. We’ve gotten lots of great prompts that are completely out of my comfort zone like: people, animals, robots, lions and aliens. It’s been fun to draw. Below is a peek at my sketches throughout the week.
